African Pygmy Hedgehog

Atelerix albiventris

Hedgehog quills are actually modified hairs made of keratin like our own hair.  On average there are about 5,000 to 6,500 of these quills. Hedgehogs cannot release their quills like a porcupine can.

These animals have some natural immunity against snake venom due to a protein in the muscular system.

Spitzer, male - Born 2013 (estimated)

Spitzer came to the Zoo as a pet surrender. After a few weeks of training, he quickly became a great ambassador for the Zoo's education team.
