It is with a very sad and heavy heart that I have to advise everyone our male river otter, Willie, passed away last week. His keeper had noted a change in his behavior and on Tuesday, and our vet took him into the office for x-rays and blood work. The vet administered meds for him but Willie showed no improvement. Willie was 16 years old. A river otters in the wild generally lives to around 8 or 9 years old and in captivity generally 15 to 18 years. He had a wonderful life at the zoo and excellent care by our keeping and veterinary staff through out his time at the zoo and especially over the last three days.
Annie our remaining otter will have a difficult time adapting to his loss as well and the keeping staff has already begun to monitor her and help with this transition.
