North America – Lead Keeper

ZooMontana is currently seeking applicants for a full time Lead Keeper in our North American Department.  The Lead Keeper is responsible for animal care according to established standards including preparing food and water for the animals, cleaning and maintaining animal exhibits and holding areas, observing animal behavior and assisting with medical procedures and animal restraint as required.  The North America collection consists of Grizzly Bears, Wolves, Raptors and various other species.  Position will be expected to monitor the safety of animal enclosures and adhere to animal and workplace health and safety procedures, including acting as the designated  Emergency Supervisor.  The lead position will complete daily animal records and other reports as required.  Keepers are also required to interact with our visitors and educate guests through presentations, keeper talks and outreaches. The incumbent will perform other duties consistent with the classification as assigned.  The lead keeper reports directly to the general curator.

The ideal candidate will have high school education complemented with a respect for and interest in animals and zoos. Preference will be given to candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology or wildlife management or the equivalent of one to two years experience working with zoo/exotic animals (Bears, Wolves and Raptors preferred) in a professional setting, or any combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities, good communication and organizational skills.  The Lead Keeper will develop and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and zoo staff in keeping with accepted guidelines for maintaining a respectful workplace as well as be able to relate well to zoo visitors. In addition, the successful candidate must be able to act in a swift, responsible manner in emergency situations and must be reliable and physically capable of performing duties of the position. Must be able to lift 60 pounds, move heavy objects, and work outdoors in all climates. This position will be required to work holidays, weekends, occasional overtime, and be available on a flexible schedule.
