The Sensory Garden is an ongoing celebration of the senses in each of us: sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing.

It is designed for accessibility to all, acknowledging individual impairments of the senses and other physical limitations. Written signs help to identify permanent plants; the soft rippling sound of a chadar waterfall creates a soothing sound environment; the annual cycles of blooming plants provide visual beauty and varying smells throughout the seasons; with the help of a staff member or tour guide, many of the plants and flowers can be tasted (some plants are poisonous); visitors are encouraged to touch the many textures of the plants. As the trees and shrubs around the garden grow, this sunken garden will have a hidden effect. A place of solitude and meditation, guests are encouraged to sit on one of the many memorial benches set along the pathway and enjoy the sensuous curiosities of nature. The Sensory Garden is truly a community effort, with with the assistance of many volunteers. Garden clubs from Billings and surrounding areas also help to design and plant the garden each spring. ZooMontana's Sensory Garden received a beautification award during Bright and Beautiful's October, 1996 award luncheon.
