Exotic Animals as Pets

So, You Want To Own An Exotic Animal?

Unusual and interesting animals are readily available to the general public in greater numbers and variety every year. Sadly, many of these animals are purchased without thought or understanding of the responsibility required in owning such an animal. When that cute little baby grows up, as babies do, into a full-grown adult…well, many people are caught off guard. That wasn’t what they thought they bought! As a consequence, the zoo hears from people every day looking for a way to unload their now unwanted pet. The problem has become so large across the entire country that many states are now passing new laws to prohibit many of these exotic animals from entering their states.

So what should you do if you think you want to own an exotic animal? First off, ask yourself WHY you would like to own such an animal. Purchasing a “pet” isn’t like buying the latest fashion in shoes that you can throw away when they wear out or hurt you or go out of style - acquiring a “pet” is a life-long commitment to that animal!

Learn as much as you can about that species! The Internet makes animal research a whole lot easier for everyone. It is extremely important that you make sure it is legal to own such an animal in your state. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) maintains lists of animals for which specialized permits and requirements are needed prior to purchasing the animal as well as lists of animals that are prohibited for importation into Montana. Import permits are also required through the Montana Department of Livestock for any exotic animal being shipped into Montana.

Ask a lot of questions! If the personnel where you wish to purchase the animal can’t give you detailed information on the animal, or provide you with information and care books on the species, go somewhere else.

Don’t buy on impulse! Give yourself a “cooling off” time to really think about what you will be getting yourself into.

Some important questions you should ask before you buy:

  • How large can the animal become when full grown?
  • If cared for properly, what is the expected life span of this animal?
  • What size holding does it require when full grown?
  • What is its diet and can it be purchased easily year-round? Is it affordable?
  • What kind of enrichment does the animal need to maintain normal behavior?
  • What kind of light, temperature and humidity requirements does this animal need to stay healthy?
  • Is there a veterinarian in the area that can treat this animal if it becomes ill?
  • Is it a potential danger, or could it become a potential danger to others when full grown?
  • What kind of diseases can it carry and are they a threat to humans?
  • Is anyone in my household (present or future) allergic to this animal?
  • What will my lifestyle be like in 5, 10, 30 years and will this animal still fit comfortably within it or can I make the necessary adjustments in my lifestyle to accommodate the animal?
  • If this animal’s normal life span is 30-60-100 years, who will care for it after I’m gone?
